To help you out, we wanted to share our top tips on getting the best value possible when you’re comparing foreign currency deals online, whether you compare dollars to euros or any currency you can think of.
Check the total cost, not just the exchange rate
When you’re buying your currency, it's important to look at the overall cost and not just compare the foreign exchange rate.
Let’s imagine that you want to compare exchange rates for euros. What you’re looking for here is a deal that offers a good exchange rate, low commission, and good value on admin costs, credit card charges and delivery fees. You might also be able to get a discount for buying over a certain amount, so look out for that too.

It’s not just about the price – make sure that you compare the little details
When you’re looking for the best foreign currency deals, it always pays to think about all those little extra details that could sway your decision. Here are a few things to consider:
When will you get your cash or prepaid currency card?
If you’re traveling the next day, you don’t want to wait ten working days for delivery. Order our Travel Money Card by 1pm (EST) and it will arrive the very next day.
How will you get your foreign currency? Would it be more convenient to have your money delivered to your home or to pick it up from the airport? At Travelex, we offer both home delivery and store pick up.
Will your credit card be charged?
Some providers charge over 2% for using a credit card to buy foreign currency, which can make a huge difference. Here at Travelex we don’t charge you for paying by credit or debit card, however you may want to check with your card issuer to find out if they charge an additional cash advance fee, as some may do when you pay using a credit card.
Choose your comparison site wisely
When you want to compare currency exchange rates for US dollars, you might think about using a comparison site. However, some comparison sites will only promote foreign currency providers that they have a commercial relationship with. Obviously, this can easily lead to confusing and conflicting results if you’re using a few different sites to compare the best euro exchange rate for your dollars – or any other currency, of course!
Know when to buy
If you’re wondering when the best time to buy your currency is, the easy answer is that there’s not really any way of knowing! Our advice is to plan ahead and use our Currency Converter to stay on top of the rates.
