The latest on the U.S dollar to Hong Kong dollar rates
The lowdown on the Hong Kong dollar
During the 19th century, Hong Kong made use of wide swathe of countries’ currencies, including Spanish dollars, Mexican pesos and Indian rupees. Once a British colony, the UK tried to standardise the currence by introducing sterling coins, but they were unpopular and foreign currency continued to be used widely.
Between 1935 and 1972 (with the exception of Japan’s occupation from 1941 - 1945), the Honk Kong dollar was pegged to the British pound. In 1967 sterling was devalued, resulting in the Honk Kong dollar increasing to $14.53/£1. From 1972 onwards, the Hong Kong dollar was pegged to the U.S. dollarat a rate of HK$5.65/US$1.
Today, the Hong Kong dollar is the thirteenth most traded currency in the world and the fourth most traded Asian currency behind the Singapore dollar (12th), the Chinese yuan (8th) and the Japanese yen (3rd). It is also used in the Macau Special Administrative Region when it circulates alongside the Macau pataca.
